Abstract

The study of large-scale irrigation projects and the agrarian policy

implemented by the Soviet state in Uzbekistan during the 20th century—particularly in the

Qashqadaryo region—remains highly relevant today. The essence of Soviet agrarian policy, its

socio-economic consequences, and especially the irrigation measures aimed at strengthening

cotton monoculture have consistently attracted the attention of historians. Consequently,

numerous monographs, articles, and research works have been produced in this field. This article

provides a historiographical analysis of the main directions of Soviet agrarian policy in the 20th

century, with a special focus on the literature concerning irrigation construction in the

Qashqadaryo region
