This article analyzes the socio-psychological significance of the subordination factor
in the activities of department heads at higher education institutions. Drawing on theoretical views of
foreign and local scholars, as well as data from an author-developed questionnaire, the study assesses the
level of subordination in university departments in Uzbekistan. The paper identifies constructive and
destructive aspects of subordination and presents practical recommendations for improving leadership
effectiveness
