Abstract

The article examines the intensification of geopolitical rivalry between Russia
and Britain in the 1870s, focusing on their foreign policy strategies toward Afghanistan and the
Emirate of Bukhara. Special emphasis is placed on the use of the Ottoman Sultan’s authority in
the Muslim world to strengthen anti-Russian sentiments and their impact on international relations
on the eve of the Second Anglo-Afghan War.
