Abstract

This article examines the origin and interpretation of the name of the
Shaybanid dynasty and its founder, Muhammad Shaybani Khan, from a historiographical and
source-studies perspective. It compares the various name forms found in historical sources
(Shahibek, Shayboq, Shabon, Shaybani, and others) and systematizes existing scholarly views on
their etymology (V. Barthold, V. Radloff, A. Z. Validi Togan, M. Tojiboyev, and others). The article
also considers the arguments for referring to the dynasty as the "Abu'l-Khayrids" rather than the
"Shaybanids."
